The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS), in partnership with the municipality of Bayambang, Pangasinan, recently completed a two-day training course on utilizing GeoRiskPH platforms. Conducted on May 2-3, 2024, at the mayor’s conference room in Bayambang Municipal Hall, the training gathered 14 participants from various local offices, including the Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (LDRRM) team, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Office, Assessor’s Office, Engineering Office, and Administrator’s Office. The comprehensive sessions were designed to equip Local Government Units (LGUs) with the skills to develop exposure databases, conduct effective hazard and risk assessments, and engage in data-driven planning and decision-making. This initiative underscores the commitment of both DOST-PHIVOLCS and Bayambang Municipality to bolster community resilience and foster a culture of proactive disaster management. The GeoRiskPH platforms are pivotal tools in disaster risk reduction and management. They provide LGUs with data and analytical capabilities to better understand hazards, assess risks, and implement appropriate mitigation measures. By training local officials on these platforms, the Bayambang LGU is empowered to take a proactive stance on disaster preparedness. The participants engaged in hands-on exercises and interactive discussions, gaining practical insights into the GeoRiskPH platforms, including GeoMapperPH, HazardHunterPH, and GeoAnalyticsPH. Utilizing these tools will significantly enhance the municipality's ability to prepare for and respond to hazards, ultimately reducing the potential impact on lives and property. A highlight of the training was a collaborative work planning activity where participants shared their insights and strategies for integrating newfound knowledge into their planning and preparedness efforts. This interactive session fostered collaboration and shared objectives among the attendees, emphasizing the importance of collective action in disaster risk reduction planning. The program culminated in a certificate award ceremony, recognizing the Bayambang LGU’s commitment to using the platform for their DRRM plans. Engr. Jojo De Guzman from the Municipal Engineering Office and Adrian O. Beltran from the Administrator’s Office were awarded the Best Surveyor Award for their exceptional work in digitizing the most number of building footprints, 624 and 615, respectively, using the GeoMapperPH web application. Their dedication and commitment set a high standard for others to follow. The GeoRiskPH training marks a significant milestone in equipping local stakeholders with the tools and skills needed for effective disaster risk management. Looking forward, DOST-PHIVOLCS remains dedicated to continually supporting and assisting the Municipality of Bayambang, Pangasinan, in their goal to reduce and mitigate disaster impacts using the platforms introduced in the GeoRiskPH training. We are taking proactive steps toward a future where communities are better prepared and equipped to address potential disasters. Through effective communication and capacity-building initiatives, we strive to advance the vision of a safe and resilient Philippines.
