Taking proactive steps towards disaster preparedness and mitigation, the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS) in collaboration with DOST 10, conducted a comprehensive training program aimed at building the capacity of the Northern Mindanao region. Held on February 27-28, 2024 at the VIP Hotel, Cagayan de Oro, Misamis Oriental, the training focused on familiarizing local government units (LGUs) with the utilization of GeoRiskPH platforms, empowering them with crucial tools for hazard assessment and risk reduction. The attendance of 69 participants was composed of planning officers, engineers, DRRM staff, and other technical and operational staff. The training initiative highlights the commitment of DOST-PHIVOLCS to equipping LGUs with innovative solutions for effective disaster management. By using the capabilities of GeoRiskPH platforms, LGUs in Northern Mindanao are set to enhance their capacity in disaster risk reduction and response. The two-day training sessions were designed to facilitate interactive learning, featuring lectures, demonstrations, and practical exercises. The program commenced with welcoming remarks from the Regional Director of DOST 10, Engr. Romela N. Ratilla followed by a video message from the Director of DOST-PHIVOLCS, Dr. Teresito Bacolcol. The training then proceeded with lectures and hands-on activities in utilizing GeoRiskPH platforms, particularly GeoMapperPH, HazardHunterPH, and GeoAnalyticsPH. These platforms offer robust functionalities for data collection, analysis, and visualization, enabling LGUs to develop comprehensive risk assessment frameworks and formulate targeted disaster response strategies. Participants also gained knowledge on hazards and disasters through lectures on Earthquake and Volcanic Hazards and the 3Rs of Disaster Preparedness. Through these lectures and engaging activities, attendees gained proficiency in utilizing GeoRiskPH platforms to gather, analyze, and share data essential for informed decision-making and preparedness. The training successfully concluded with messages of ways forward from the participants and closing remarks from Mr. John Harold B. Tabuzo, Information Technology Officer I of DOST-PHIVOLCS. Looking ahead, DOST-PHIVOLCS remains committed to sustaining its support for LGUs in Northern Mindanao and the rest of the regions, ensuring that they are equipped with the necessary tools and knowledge to mitigate the impact of disasters and promote the preparedness and resilience of their constituents. Through continued collaboration and capacity-building efforts, the vision of a safer and more resilient Philippines can be realized, one region at a time.
