The provincial government and DOST-Davao Occidental, driven by a strong resolve to protect and empower its people, have recognized the urgent need to bolster their disaster risk reduction strategies. As part of their commitment, they conducted training on the use of the GeoRiskPH platform, where innovation and necessity meet to boost the province’s disaster preparedness and resilience. Hosted by the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS), the training brought together 37 participants representing various offices and agencies from across the province, including the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), the Provincial Planning and Development Office (PPDO), the Provincial Engineering Office (PEO), the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), Municipal Engineering Office (MEO), Municipal Planning and Development Office (MPDO), and DOST XI - Provincial Science and Technology Office (PSTO). This two-day event was held at the Emilia Oasis of Faith in the Island Garden City of Samal, Davao del Norte, from November 13-14, 2024. The training introduced various GeoRiskPH tools such as GeoMapperPH, HazardHunterPH, and GeoAnalyticsPH. Through a series of interactive lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on activities, participants learned how to navigate and effectively use these platforms. Participants were guided step-by-step on signing in and utilizing the GeoMapperPH web and mobile applications to populate and maintain their exposure databases essential for risk assessments. The sessions included engaging lectures on earthquake and volcanic hazards, where participants learned the different geologic hazards that can pose serious risks to communities. These discussions helped everyone better understand the causes, impacts, and ways to address these threats. Another key part of the sessions was focused on the 3Rs of disaster preparedness—Readiness, Response, and Recovery—using the GeoRiskPH platform. These tools made it easier for participants to plan, act, and rebuild, giving them practical and accessible ways to help their communities become safer and more resilient. Additionally, participants viewed their digitized building footprints using GeoRiskPH Web Services integrated into QGIS software, enhancing their ability to analyze and visualize data. During the Re-Entry Action Planning (REAP) session, the participants drafted action plans and collaborated on strategies for integrating the GeoRiskPH platform into their respective roles. They outlined preparedness initiatives and their approaches to strengthen disaster response efforts. Mr. Jayson Hontimara from PDRRMO Davao Occidental shared their experiences and future plans for utilizing the GeoRiskPH platform. These plans involve developing, maintaining, and managing a database of elements at risk, including population, urban areas, natural-resource-based assets, lifeline utilities, and critical facilities, and integrating this information into the planning process using GeoMapperPH. Additionally, they leverage available local and baseline data to assess the vulnerability of these elements to multi-hazards and use GeoAnalyticsPH to prepare targeted programs, projects, and activities. The two-day training concluded with a certificate-awarding ceremony, recognizing the participants' dedication and active engagement throughout the sessions. Mr. Harry Chester Camoro, Provincial Government Department Head and Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer of Davao Occidental, delivered an inspiring closing message. He encouraged the participants to bring the knowledge gained from the training back to their respective offices, translating it into actionable strategies and strengthening their commitment to resilience and disaster preparedness. Looking ahead, DOST-PHIVOLCS reaffirms its unwavering commitment to supporting the Province of Davao Occidental. This event was more than just a training workshop—it was a testament to the province's readiness to embrace the future, equipped with knowledge and cutting-edge technology. Kumbati, Davao Occidental! Padayon sa Kahandaan ug Kaluwasan!
